The government announced on the 26th, “As the heat wave is lasting longer than usual, there are concerns about damage during various local festivals and sports events,” and “Local governments should thoroughly prepare safety measures for heat wave-related events and gatherings for large groups.”

Lee Han-kyung, director of the Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, announced this at a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCHQ) held on this day with related ministries, including the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and local governments on responding to heat waves.

This meeting was held to review the status of each organization’s response to the heat wave, as concerns are growing over increased damage to life and property as the heat wave is expected to continue until early September.

According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the current number of heat wave days (22 days) is twice the average (10.3 days), the third highest on record. The number of tropical nights (19.2 days) has already broken the previous record of 16.8 days (1994).

The number of heat-related illnesses was the second highest in history, following 2018, which had the most damage. As of the previous day, more than 3,100 heat-related illnesses (3,133 people) had occurred due to the heat wave, and 29 of them died.

Property damage is also increasing. 1.06 million livestock have died, and 25 million fish have been damaged.

The chief of the headquarters said, “The heat wave is expected to continue until early September, and there is a high risk that damage will increase due to the rising sea temperatures,” and asked, “Each ministry and local government should do their best until the end to prevent additional damage.”

The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Employment and Labor have decided to continue to strengthen measures such as suspending work during hot hours, checking on their well-being, monitoring, and on-site inspections to protect vulnerable groups such as elderly farmers, fishermen, and field workers who are vulnerable to heat waves.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is strengthening support for the installation of cooling facilities to minimize damage to livestock. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is supporting equipment to cope with high temperatures, such as oxygen supply devices, to prevent the death of farmed fish.

In particular, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided to strengthen safety management in response to the recent occurrence of a large number of heat-related illnesses at outdoor performances and sports events. In the event of outdoor events, the Ministry plans to provide guidance to relevant organizations to establish heat-related safety management measures.

The chief of the headquarters repeatedly urged, “Please practice heat wave precautions, such as refraining from outdoor activities during hot hours and drinking plenty of water, to avoid suffering from heat damage.”
