Government, Houthis agree to de-escalate tensions over banks

The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced today, Tuesday, that he received a written text from the Yemeni government and the Houthi group regarding the two parties’ agreement on several measures to de-escalate the situation regarding the banking sector and Yemenia Airlines.

The agreement stipulated, according to a statement by Grundberg, the cancellation of recent decisions and measures against banks by both sides and the cessation of any similar decisions or measures in the future, the resumption of Yemenia flights between Sana’a and Jordan and the increase of the number of its flights to three per day, and the operation of flights to Cairo and India daily or as needed.

The agreement also stipulated, according to the statement, holding meetings to address the administrative, technical and financial challenges facing the company, and starting to hold meetings to discuss all economic and humanitarian issues based on the roadmap.

In the statement, Grundberg referred to the important role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in reaching this agreement, expressing the United Nations’ readiness to work with the two parties to implement the measures they agreed upon, and offered his office to support communication with the authorities in Jordan, Egypt and India.

Grundberg stressed the need for the two parties to cooperate in order to reach an economy that serves all Yemenis, supports the implementation of a ceasefire in the country, and the resumption of a comprehensive political process.
