BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that the government is adopting a two-pronged policy regarding the quota reform movement and said that on the one hand the government is saying that innocent students and quota reform leaders will not be tortured, on the other hand, the arrest of ordinary students has been continued. Common people, children with disabilities and even employees of different classes and professions are not spared from such inhuman activities.

He said these things in a statement sent to the media on Sunday (July 27).

BNP Chairperson Advisory Council member Dr. Farhad Halim Donor, BNP International Affairs Secretary Barrister Naseeruddin Wasim, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Saiful Alam Nirav, Aminul Haque, Rafiqul Alam Majnu and numerous activists were arrested and remanded and tortured. During the day yesterday, 30 armed terrorists and some plainclothes policemen entered Roseburg Rice Mill owned by Sherpur District BNP General Secretary Hazrat Ali and destroyed crores of rupees of property by doing extensive vandalism and looting. Rajshahi District BNP Joint Convener Saiful Islam Marshall, Rangpur Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Shahidul Islam Mizu, Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal Deputy General Secretary Flight Lt. (Retd.) Dr. Chhatra Dal leaders HM Abu Jafar, Tabibur Rahman Sagar, Abu Hannan Talukdar, Imam Al Nasser Mishuk, Fazlur Rahman Bijay, Irfan Ahmed Fahim, Ferdous Mahmud Rubel and Nazmur Hasan Papon were arrested yesterday by the police in plain clothes, along with Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan. Apart from this, Sanjeev Bhuiyan, a BNP member of Dhanbandhi Ward No. 10 of Sirajganj Municipality, who was arrested during the quota reform movement, died today after being brutally beaten by the police and seriously injured. Quota reform coordinators Sarjid Alam and Hasnat Abdullah were picked up by the DB police. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has made a statement expressing deep concern over the government’s many-faceted conspiracies, machinations and persecutions surrounding the students’ quota reform movement.

The BNP Secretary General said that the quota reform activists are being arrested and tortured constantly, while Dhaka University and law enforcement agencies across the country who openly shot and killed ordinary students in the chest have not arrested any of them, instead the head of government is crying over them.

More than 9 thousand activists have been arrested across the country. Even though the arrested former MP-ministers and senior BNP leaders are sick, they are being tortured in remand for 5/7 days like banned terrorists. Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Saiful Alam Nirav, Aminul Haque, Rafiqul Alam Majnu and many activists were arrested and remanded and tortured. They are brutally blindfolded and physically tortured, and continuous efforts are being made to extract confessions. They informed the court, after which the court continued their remand at the behest of the Chief Minister. The countrymen are worried about their physical health, if anything untoward happens in the ongoing torture on them, the government and the law enforcement agencies will have to take the responsibility. Even inside the jails, activists are subjected to brutal torture, which is highly inhumane and against the law. Torture in police custody is a crime against humanity.

He also said that today the country has become a state of terror. The number of killings of innocent students is increasing day by day. However, the government must resign to the people’s demand, no matter how cunning it is. When people started protesting, this protest will continue. The government and law enforcement officials say that no one was killed in the shooting, but everyone from children Ahad, Sameer and elderly pedestrians were shot dead.

We have already learned from various sources that the number of murders will be very long. Although the government has described the government buildings damaged by miscreants, the death toll in the anti-quota movement has not been released so far. The list of deaths is not published to cover up deaths. Moreover, the arrest of young students and common people has been continued in the quota reform movement across the country.

In a statement, the BNP Secretary General called for the withdrawal of false cases filed against all the arrested BNP and opposition leaders and students, stop torture on remand and immediate unconditional release of all. Jatiyatavadi Krishak Dal co-general secretary Flight Lt. (Retd.) Dr. BNP Secretary General also called for Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan to appear in public.

He prayed for the peace of the soul of Sanjeev Bhuiyan, member of Dhanbandhi Ward No. 10 of Sirajganj Municipality and expressed his condolences to the family members.

In order to maintain its power, the government is establishing a reign of terror across the country and has continued to kill and torture, and demanded immediate resignation. Otherwise, the people of the country will form mass resistance in unity.
