As the crisis intensifies in the Middle East, the government announced on the 6th that it will issue a ‘do not travel’ warning for the Israel-Lebanon border area starting at midnight on the 7th.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 6th, “Citizens staying in Lebanon and Israel should leave the country by air as soon as possible.” Travel alerts are divided into Level 1 (travel caution), Level 2 (travel restraint), Level 3 (travel recommendation), and Level 4 (travel ban). If a Level 4 travel alert is issued, residents must evacuate or withdraw immediately. Those who stay or travel in violation of this are subject to up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won under the Passport Act.

The areas subject to the travel ban are the northern border of Israel (4 km from the Blue Line) and the southern border of Lebanon (5 km from the Blue Line). The Blue Line is a temporary border established by the UN in 2000 to confirm Israel’s withdrawal from the Lebanon area. Level 3 is in effect for all areas of Israel and Lebanon except this area. A special travel advisory will be issued for Iran for a limited time.

Recently, as a direct conflict between Iran and Israel is imminent in the Middle East, concerns about an escalation are growing. Regarding the assassination of Ismail Haniya, the supreme leader of the Palestinian armed group Hamas, in Tehran, Iran on the 31st of last month, pointed to Israel as the mastermind behind the incident. Israel is reported to be considering a preemptive strike in case Iran retaliates.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested, “Citizens planning to travel to the Israel-Lebanon border area, which has been designated as a travel ban area, should cancel their plans, and those currently in the area should leave immediately,” and “If you are currently in Iran, unless it is for an urgent matter, please depart for a safe area.”
