The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will raise the travel alert for the border areas of Israel and Lebanon to the highest level, Level 4, “Do Not Travel.” A special travel advisory will also be issued for Iran for a limited time. This measure is in response to the increased possibility of an escalation in the Middle East, with the assassination of the top leader of the political bureau of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Tehran, Iran, on the 31st of last month, and Iran’s threat of “bloody revenge” against Israel.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 6th that it will issue a ‘travel ban’ for the border area between Israel and Lebanon from midnight on the 7th. The travel ban will be issued in the area 4km north and 5km south of the ‘Blue Line’, the border between Israel and Lebanon. The ‘Blue Line’ is a temporary boundary line established by the UN in 2000 to confirm Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised the existing travel refrain (travel warning level 2) for Iran to a special travel advisory (level 2.5).

The entire territory of Israel and Lebanon is currently under a Level 3 Red Alert, which means “Do not travel,” out of a Level 1 to 4 travel alert. Only the border areas and the Gaza Strip, where the travel alert was recently raised, have a Level 4 Black Alert, which means “Do not travel.”

It has been reported that the authorities are aware that there are no Korean nationals staying in the border area between Israel and Lebanon. In the future, if a Korean national enters this area where a travel ban has been issued, he or she may be subject to imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won under the Passport Act.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested, “Citizens who had planned to travel to the Israel-Lebanon border area should cancel their plans, and those currently staying there should withdraw immediately,” and “Cancelate or postpone visits to Iran, and depart for safe areas unless it is for an urgent matter.”

As of the 6th, it is known that there are about 550 Korean nationals residing in Israel, 120 in Lebanon, and 110 in Iran. It is reported that most of them are long-term residents, including local Koreans. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it will continue to closely monitor the situation in the Middle East and continue to take various measures to ensure the safety of our citizens.
