jpnn.com – JAKARTA – Cybersecurity expert Alfons Tanujaya believes the government needs to maintain independence in cybersecurity technology.

The government is also considered necessary to consider involving quality local players in improving Indonesia’s cyber security.

This is especially important following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on July 19, 2024, which resulted in approximately 8.5 million Windows systems crashing worldwide.

The losses incurred were worth US$ 500 million or Rp 7.86 trillion for Delta Airlines in the US and more than AU$ 1 billion or Rp 10.41 trillion for Australian companies.

The incident also had a negative impact on transparency, medical, and the internal operational systems of the government in Indonesia.

“Until now, Indonesian government institutions and systems have relied on operating systems (computers) developed by the US. I think this will worsen the threat to cyber security and data leaks in Indonesia,” said Alfons in his statement, Friday (23/8).

According to Alfons, the Windows access disruption incident occurred mainly in sectors that widely use Microsoft’s US Windows system.

Therefore, there is a risk that hackers will use similar methods to attack national systems and steal information and data in Indonesia.
