SÃO PAULO (Reuters) -The government of the State of São Paulo launched this Saturday a notice for what it calls the Intercity Train (TIC) Eixo Norte, a 13.5 billion reais project that aims to connect the city of São Paulo to Campinas and which it should go up for auction at the end of February next year.

The state government stated that the project, previously launched under João Doria’s government, was made “more attractive” through a 42% greater contribution from public authorities for the project, totaling 8.5 billion reais.

According to the management led by Tarcísio de Freitas, part of the resources will come from a loan of 6.4 billion reais signed between the government of São Paulo and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

“On the other hand, the value of consideration to be paid by the state government fell from 400 million to around 250 million reais over the 30 years of the concession,” stated the State in a press release.

The winner of the auction will be the one who presents the greatest payment reduction by the State for the provision of services.

Furthermore, the State will guarantee 90% of the estimated revenue for the operation of the express service between São Paulo and Campinas. If revenue from tariffs exceeds the expected total by 10%, the profit will be shared equally between the State and the private operator, stated the government.

“These improvements will guarantee a minimum revenue for the operation of the ICT, in addition to making the mode more competitive and at a fair price for the user”, promises the São Paulo government.

The schedule foresees the entry into operation of the Intermetropolitan Train (TIM (BVMF:)) in 2029 and the Intercidades Train in 2031.

The project foresees the connection, by rail, between the capital of São Paulo and Campinas (TIC), a distance of around 100 kilometers; the implementation of TIM between Campinas and the nearby city of Jundiaí; and the concession of Line 7-Rubi from Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM).

The maximum fee established in the notice for the TIC is 64 reais. The trip will last 64 minutes, with 15 trains carrying out the operation, according to the São Paulo government.
