Coronel Erasmo Dias was responsible for the operation that arrested more than 800 students during the military dictatorship

The Palácio dos Bandeirantes sanctioned this Wednesday (28) a bill that honors the military and former deputy Erasmo Dias, one of the exponents of the Military Dictatorship. The measure was signed by acting governor Felício Ramuth (PSD).

The proposal foresees that a junction on the Manílio Gobbi highway, in Paraguaçu Paulista, bear the name of the military man. The project was forwarded by former state deputy Frederico D’Ávila and approved in 2022 by parliamentarians.

Erasmo Dias was federal deputy between 1979 and 1983 and state deputy between 1987 and 1999. Before, he was secretary of Public Security of São Paulo.

In 1977, he led an invasion of a camp at PUC-SP against members of the União Nacional dos Estudantes. In all, 854 students were arrested.

At the time, 134 people were found guilty of subversion. Around 90 students were registered by the São Paulo State Department of Political and Social Order (Deops) and another 42 were prosecuted based on the National Security Law.

In a note, the Academic Center 22 de Agosto of PUC-SP criticized the project and the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp).

“This note represents the consternation and repudiation of ALESP, which allowed the processing of an absolutely undemocratic project and which invalidates the struggle of thousands of students and hundreds of militants who lost their lives during the military dictatorship”, he says.

“We will not admit homage to torturers. May the legacy of struggle of Nadir Kfouri, Carlos Eduardo Pires Fleury and so many other companions who dedicated their lives for democracy never be forgotten”.

The note also accuses the Brazilian State of granting amnesty to torturers and not blaming crimes committed by military personnel during the dictatorship.

“Unfortunately, the Brazilian State did not prosecute and punish the perpetrators who violated democracy and Brazilians during the long 21 years of military rule. The conscious act of amnestying organizers of state violence gives rise to denial of the oppression perpetrated by the military dictatorship and to pay homage to cruel and somber people like this one”, completes the Academic Center.
