Title: Government Pharmaceutical Organization Expedites Delivery of Oseltamivir for Children

Subtitle: Favipiravir Approved as Alternative Treatment for Influenza

Date: October 3, 2023

The Director of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization revealed that oseltamivir for young children has been delivered. For older children, the 45mg dose is expected to be delivered by Oct. 8, the same as the 75mg drug for adults.

Dr. Mingkwan Suphanphong, Director of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO), announced on October 3 that the distribution of oseltamivir to medical facilities across the country has been expedited. In particular, oseltamivir for young children, with a dosage of 30 milligrams, is expected to be gradually delivered to all areas this afternoon. The GPO anticipates a smooth clearance of medicines for older children, with a dosage of 45 milligrams, and expects delivery to be completed by October 8. Additionally, the 75 milligram dose of oseltamivir for adults will also be delivered, leaving only 50 boxes in stock for emergencies.

Dr. Mingkwan highlighted that the demand for oseltamivir will gradually be resolved following the National Health Security Office (NHSO)’s resolution to utilize Favipiravir for the treatment of influenza. The Subcommittee on the List of Essential Medicines will hold discussions regarding this recommendation. Consequently, the Department of Medical Services has adjusted its guidelines for treating influenza patients, allowing medical and public health personnel to use Favipiravir as an alternative treatment option. This policy aims to facilitate the access to medicine and reduce medical expenses.

“Oseltamivir and Favipiravir are now sufficient due to the inclusion of these drugs in the healthcare system. Furthermore, some Favipiravir medication still remains in hospitals. However, it is crucial to understand that Thailand has not experienced a prolonged influenza outbreak in the past two years. The population’s use of masks to protect against COVID-19 has led to a lack of immunity to influenza, resulting in an increase of 4-5 times in influenza cases this time,” explained Dr. Mingkwan.

The Department of Medical Services has released the revised treatment guidelines for influenza patients on October 2, 2023, to guide medical and public health personnel in their management of the virus. The guidelines titled “Influenza Patient” can be accessed via the provided link.

As the Government Pharmaceutical Organization expedites the delivery of oseltamivir for children across the country, the inclusion of Favipiravir as an alternative treatment option signifies a step towards effectively combatting the influenza outbreak and safeguarding public health.]
