Government prepares for peace talks with the Gulf Clan

The government of President Gustavo Petro continues with its policy of “total peace” by opening a new space for dialogue with the Clan del Golfo, one of the most notorious armed groups in the country.

Yesterday, Monday, Resolution 257 of July 8, 2024 was announcedwhich establishes the creation of a “socio-legal” conversation space with members of this illegal organization.

LThe initiative’s main objective is to verify the Gulf Clan’s willingness to adhere to the rule of law. and to define the terms of their submission to justice, as permitted by law. In addition, it seeks to build peace in the regions affected by the presence of this armed group, under the direction of the Peace Commissioner.

To carry out this task, the Government has appointed political scientist Álvaro Jiménez Milán as the main representative at the dialogue table. Along with him, the official delegation will include María Gaitán Valencia, Armando Custodio Wouriyu, Víctor Negrete Barrera and Águeda Plata Gómez.

In addition, the Government has recognized six spokesmen of the Clan del Golfo and has requested the suspension of their arrest warrants.. These spokespersons include key figures such as Jobanis de Jesús Ávila, alias Chiquito Malo, top commander of the armed group, and José Gonzalo Sánchez, alias Gonzalito, leader of the Roberto Vargas Block that operates in the Bajo Cauca region of Antioquia.

“The Socio-Legal Conversation Space will be aimed at verifying the will to move towards the rule of law, establishing the terms of submission to justice in the terms permitted by law,” the resolution reads.
