MEI: Government proposes to almost triple the tax range

BlockTrends – The Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC) plans to propose the creation of a new tax bracket for the MEI that earn between R$ 81 thousand and R$ 144.9 thousand per year. The MEI Technical Committee, of the Permanent Forum of Micro and Small Businesses (FPMPE), approved the proposal this Thursday (24).

However, the MDIC is still evaluating the format of the proposal before sending it to the National Congress. In this sense, currently, a MEI with revenues of up to R$ 81,000 pays a fixed amount of 5% of the minimum wage (equivalent to R$ 66). The new proposal suggests a rate of BRL 181.14 for MEIs that earn between BRL 81 thousand and BRL 144,912.

Thus, with the change, around 470,000 companies could become MEIs. The number currently in Brazil is 15.4 million registered MEIs. In addition, the MDIC also wants to create a “transition ramp” to help entrepreneurs adapt to tax and operational changes when moving from MEI to microenterprise (ME).

In this sense, if a micro-entrepreneur exceeds the billing ceiling by up to 20%, he will have 180 days to make the necessary adjustments. During this period, he will not need to issue an invoice for all sales, hire an accountant or make adjustments at the Board of Trade. However, if the billing exceeds 20% of the limit, the entrepreneur must stop being MEI.

However, the proposal suggests eliminating retroactivity in the transition of the tax regime. If they currently exceed the limit, taxes apply retroactively to January of the year of the exceedance.
