In an interview with 24 HORAS, the head of the Commission for the Reconstruction of Mexico City, Jabnely Maldonado Mezaexplained that these are “exceptional” cases in a minimum number of schools.

In the capital, 2,026 public primary education institutions were damaged by the 2017 earthquakes, of which 47 had moderate damage; 1,136 had minor damage; 834, from moderate to severe, and nine had serious damage, according to reports from the agency. In the period from 2019 to February 2021, the Local government allocated 2,242 million pesos for the care of 1,132 schools. The work included reconstruction, reinforcement, maintenance, piles, new construction, rehabilitation, equipment and furniture.
It was six years later, in July 2023 that the Capital Government announced the completion of the rehabilitation and total reconstruction of these facilities, which already have certification in building safety.
“1,026 schools that suffered damage in the 2017 earthquakes have already been completely rebuilt or rehabilitated, some of them completely rebuilt due to the extent of the damage and others rehabilitated to a greater or lesser extent,” said the head of Government Marti Batres, on the follow-up to the work initiated by the now president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
The affected campuses were concentrated in 12 mayoralties: The city of Tlahuac is home to 1,000 inhabitants, and is home to 1,000 inhabitants.
