Government statement on the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) – Info Mali

Mali took part in the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on post-Covid-19 recovery, which was held this Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Baku, Azerbaijan . Below is the government press release on the major decisions taken at this Summit.

Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Government Spokesman, had the honor of representing HE Colonel Assimi GOÏTA, President of the Transition, Head of State to this important meeting on post-Covid 19 recovery, which was also attended by more than 70 countries and international organizations.

This Summit was an opportunity for the Member States of the Non-Aligned Movement to take stock of the pandemic, to assess the efforts made to deal with it, to discuss the Movement’s vision of post- pandemic and to salute the place of solidarity within borders and between States.

In his opening speech, HE Mr. Ilhem ALIYEV, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, also President of NAM since 2019, proposed the establishment of the headquarters of the Movement in his country. He also stressed the need for reform of the United Nations Security Council, which is now obsolete and ineffective, after insisting on respect for the sovereignty of States and denouncing the negative role of France in Africa.

In his speech, Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga congratulated the Azerbaijani authorities and reiterated Mali’s support for the Non-Aligned Movement.

He also presented the national mechanism for preventing and combating Covid-19, before outlining the investment provided by the Government to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic on the population in the socio-economic and financial field. , in a context deeply marked by the fight against terrorist groups operating in Mali.

On the sidelines of the work, the Minister of State, Colonel Abdoulaye MAÏGA had bilateral exchanges with many Heads of Delegation, in particular the Prime Minister of Algeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia, the Minister of Health of Chad and the Deputy Minister of Cooperation of Burkina Faso.

It should be recalled that Mali holds the Vice-Presidency of NAM, on behalf of the African Group.

Furthermore, in the final document entitled Global Call for Action: Supporting post-pandemic recovery in African countries, the participants invited the international community to support the efforts of these States to achieve the objectives and aspirations contained in the ‘Agenda 2063.

Thus, they decided on the creation of a Support Fund which the Republic of Azerbaijan immediately endowed with an amount of one million dollars, as the first contributor and in its capacity as Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement .
