Coronavirus hospitalizations 1,357, highest this year
Treatment to be supplied sequentially starting next week
Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education: “Stop going to school for confirmed cases, etc.”
As the number of hospitalizations due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has recently increased again, reaching the highest number this year at over 1,300, quarantine authorities have decided to strongly recommend that hospital workers and visitors wear masks.
At a meeting of the public-private COVID-19 council on the 14th, Director of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Ji Young-mi announced, “As the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 is rapidly increasing, the number of confirmed hospitalizations in the second week of August has surpassed the peak in February (875).” She added, “We plan to strengthen our guidelines to strongly recommend that both workers and visitors at infection-vulnerable facilities, such as medical institutions and nursing hospitals, wear masks.” The KDCA announced that the number of confirmed hospitalizations in the second week of August (4th to 10th) increased by 58% compared to the previous week (861).
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency also recommended that high-risk groups, such as the elderly and those with underlying diseases, wear masks in indoor multi-use facilities and avoid large-scale indoor events in enclosed spaces.
Regarding the shortage of COVID-19 treatments appearing all over the country, Commissioner Ji said, “We are securing reserve funds and working to purchase and supply additional treatments,” and “Additionally introduced treatments will be supplied sequentially starting next week, so that smooth administration will be possible starting from the fourth week of August.”
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education sent an official document to each school on the same day stating that confirmed COVID-19 patients and symptomatic patients are subject to school refusal. The document that the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education sent to elementary, middle, and high schools in Seoul on the same day contained the content that “confirmed infectious disease patients (including symptomatic patients) are subject to school refusal.” According to the Enforcement Decree of the School Health Act, a principal can refrain from attending school if a patient is infected with an infectious disease.
