The Governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, asked citizens to take part in a campaign by which they demand that Congress increase the penalties imposed on child rapists and murderers.
After the unfortunate events and the fatal outcome of Sara Sofía Delgado in the municipality of Candelaria, the president asked in an open letter to Colombians that more severe sanctions be applied to those who commit these terrible crimes.
“This week has been painful for Valle del Cauca, Candelaria and Colombia, especially for the family of little Sara Sofía. Today I want to share some thoughts to encourage joint action,” he said in the letter, in which he also recalls that “in our country, violence against girls and boys has become a daily tragedy. The abuse figures are alarming and show that our girls are the main victims of gender violence that we cannot ignore. There is an urgent need to protect them, and we cannot allow the attackers to go unpunished.”
Punishment for life
For that reason, Toro said, “this is not the time to talk about reducing sentences, but to come together to demand tougher sanctions. I encourage a citizen campaign to ask Congress for a law that imposes a life sentence on those who rape, abuse or murder a girl or boy. Who can ignore this suffering?
Closing her open letter, Dilian Governor Francisca Toro reiterated “I invite all Colombians to support this cause, collect signatures and tell the attackers that their time of impunity is over. We will not fail our girls. “We owe it to Colombia.”
