LONDON > Today is a day of victory for the thousands of NHS workers in England who have been on picket lines for the past three months. The government today announced the new salary revision after negotiations with the unions. It was a victory for Britain’s struggling working class and a blow to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s insistence that he would never go ahead with this year’s pay revisions with the unions. Until a few weeks ago, the government had repeatedly announced that this year’s pay deal could not be renegotiated and that extra cash for health workers would jeopardize the fight against soaring inflation. But when unions including the RCN, the only nurses’ union in Britain, went on strike and lined the picket line, the government had to change its word and make a revised offer. Accordingly, in this year’s salary, in addition to the increase already given, six per cent will be given as bonus and five per cent from next April. The lowest-ranking employees will get a 10 percent raise. Union members will vote and make the final decision whether to accept the new contract made by the unions with the government or not. Every time NHS workers have gone on strike, the British public has given massive support to the strike, even when the government dismissed the strike. Read on deshabhimani.com
