Goyang City Educational Development Special Zone Launching Ceremony (Goyang Special Mayor Lee Dong-hwan)

Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) is creating a pleasant educational environment through a school facility improvement project and supporting specialized education programs to nurture future talent.

Every year, the city improves old school facilities through a school environment improvement cooperation project with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Goyang Office of Education). We implement a facility sharing system that provides convenience by opening school facilities, such as school gyms and parking lots, to residents. We plan to support a variety of programs for field-centered experiential education and career exploration, and create a regionally specialized education model as a special education development zone.

Goyang Special Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “We will continue to support the improvement of educational infrastructure so that students can learn and pursue their dreams in a comfortable environment, and foster future talent through specialized educational programs such as cutting-edge 4th industry, media, and content, and the creation of special educational development zones.” revealed.

Support for environmental improvement in 32 schools this year… Improvement of old facilities such as pedestrian paths, elevators, heaters, etc.

Goyang Special City has been promoting school environment improvement projects every year in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Goyang Office of Education).

The school environment improvement project is a project that improves old school facilities and supports the reinforcement of disaster-risk facilities in order to provide a pleasant learning environment for students. Goyang Special City and the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education each share 50% of the project cost, and 5.2 billion won was provided to 46 schools in 2023 and 3.8 billion won to 32 schools in 2024.

Last year, projects to improve old facilities at 46 schools were completed, including paving the pedestrian path at the main entrance of Hwasu Middle School, repair work on the floor and stairs of the annex building at Hyeonsan Middle School, and replacement of old entrance doors at Goyang Songsan Middle School. This year, 32 construction projects in urgent need of improvement were selected for student safety, including replacement of old sunshades at Jeodong Elementary School, replacement of air conditioners and heaters at Hwajeong High School, improvement construction of heating and hot water facilities at Holt School, and replacement construction of old elevators at Baekma Elementary School. Currently, 8 schools have been completed, and 24 schools are scheduled to be completed by the end of February next year.

For school environment improvement projects, a demand survey for each school is conducted prior to budget establishment, and business department personnel check the site. Afterwards, final support is confirmed through selection procedures such as priority selection and deliberation by the Education Development Council. In 2025, in accordance with the administrative policy of the 8th popularly elected 3-Secure Administration (Safety, Safety, and Stability), we plan to prioritize citizen safety and support safety-vulnerable facilities and old school facilities first.

School gymnasium and parking lot shared with local residents… Effect of expanding convenience facilities

The city promotes a school facility sharing system to promote coexistence between the community and schools.

The Goyang-type school facility sharing system shares school gymnasiums and parking lots with local residents and provides opportunities for cultural and sports activities within the scope of not infringing on the school’s educational activities. If school facilities are opened and utilized, the effect of expanding convenience facilities available to citizens can be expected, and the budget can be utilized efficiently without redundant investment in large-scale facilities.

As of this year, a total of 14 elementary, middle, and high schools have signed an agreement and are participating in the school facility sharing project. Open school facilities include 8 gymnasiums, 6 parking lots (180 spaces), and 1 library. The gym is available after school on weekdays and in the morning and afternoon on Saturdays and holidays, and the parking lot is available from 18:00 to 8:00 the next day.

The city actively supports the improvement of school facilities in cooperation with the local community and strives to create schools that students and citizens can use safely. Schools that participate in the school facility sharing system will be given additional points when applying for environmental improvement projects, and the plan will be prioritized in 2025.
