Goyang Special City is sequentially promoting the creation of long-term unimplemented parks that have been adrift for decades and is expanding green spaces for living in the city center by creating a forest experience center for children.

Last June, Deogyang-gu Gwansan Neighborhood Park finally opened its doors after 46 years of planning and construction. This year, the second phase of the Tanhyeon Neighborhood Park in Ilsanseo-gu is in full swing, and the construction project for the Todang 1 Neighborhood Park in Deogyang-gu is also underway. The third children’s forest experience center was created in Deogyang-gu Seongra Park.

Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “Green parks are valuable places of rest that help maintain a comfortable life, but it is also true that there are difficulties in securing a budget due to the enormous cost of purchasing the land,” and added, “We will boldly invest in creating convenient facilities for a comfortable living environment by reducing budget spending and working hard to secure national road funds.”

Tanhyeon Neighborhood Park Phase 2 Construction Promotion… Construction to Begin in February of This Year, Completion Scheduled for June of Next Year

Tanhyeon Neighborhood Park is located at 92-18 Tanhyeon-dong, Ilsanseo-gu. In 2016, the first phase of the project was to create a park of 31,138㎡. In February, the second phase of the project, a park of 57,072㎡, began construction and is scheduled for completion in June of next year. When construction is completed, the total area of the park will be 88,210㎡. The main facilities being created this time are a lawn, fountain, playground, pine scent garden, and circular walking path.

The city plans to develop the park into a green space for local residents to use as a leisure and recreation facility in conjunction with the Phase 1 construction section where the park has already been completed.

Tanhyeon Neighborhood Park was designated as a neighborhood park in urban planning facilities in 1974. However, due to difficulties in securing a budget, such as land purchase costs, the project was delayed for a long time and was even in danger of being canceled as an urban planning facility. However, Goyang City completed the first stage of construction between 2011 and 2016 and received approval for the second stage implementation plan in 2020, giving momentum to the project. Land compensation was completed by August of last year, and construction began in February of this year. Construction is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in June of next year.

In addition, the third phase construction will be carried out on a scale of 269,003㎡, which is much larger than the first and second phases. The executor is Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and Gyeonggi Housing Corporation (GH). The third phase construction is currently in the process of land compensation, and construction is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and be completed by the end of next year.

Todang 1st Neighborhood Park… Land Compensation Completed, Residents’ Opinions Collected

Todang 1st Neighborhood Park is located at 653-65 Haengsin-dong, Deogyang-gu. The city plans to create a green park with an area of 102,882㎡ where citizens can relax. The main facilities include an entrance plaza, a lawn, an observation facility, a forest playground, and a yellow dirt trail.

Todang 1st Neighborhood Park was designated as an urban planning facility in 1971, but due to difficulties in securing a budget, such as land purchase costs, the park was not built for a long time. However, after receiving approval for the implementation plan in 2020, the park construction was accelerated, and due to changes in the local government bond issuance source, the central investment review of local finance in 2023 obtained appropriate results, allowing land compensation to proceed. As of 2024, all land compensation has been completed, and after holding a resident briefing session in June to collect opinions from residents, the park construction plan is currently being changed with the goal of starting construction in 2025.

Seongra Park Children’s Forest Experience Center Established… Providing Experiences of Communing with Nature

Goyang City is operating a forest experience center for children in Seongra Park, Deogyang-gu. This facility is the third facility following the forest experience centers for children in Jeongbalsan Park and Angok Wetland Park.

Seongra Park Children’s Forest Experience Center is operated as an outdoor experiential learning center, sand play, log stepping stone, net hanging, spider web climbing, and various other experiential places. It is operated by selecting a contracted company and assigning children’s forest instructors.

Seongra Park Children’s Forest Experience Center completed construction in April and completed registration as a public children’s forest experience center with the Korea Forest Service in June. The program was originally scheduled to begin on August 5, but due to the heat wave warning, it is scheduled to resume operation once the heat subsides.

The city is operating a children’s forest experience program at Angok Wetland and Jeongbalsan Children’s Forest Experience Center from March 20 to December 13 this year. The children’s forest experience program is a program where children can run around freely in the forest and interact with nature through their five senses. Last year, it received a great response, with over 10,000 participants.

The Jeongbalsan Children’s Forest Experience Center offers differentiated programs for children, such as ‘Let’s Play, Grass’ and ‘Let’s Play, Pine Tree’, while the Angok Wetland Children’s Forest Experience Center offers ‘Let’s Play, Water Plants’ and ‘Let’s Play, Aquatic Plants’. In addition, opportunities are being provided to learn about carbon neutral practices and the importance of forests.
