A series of diverse performance festivals, including dance and traditional Korean music, are held one after another, adding to the heat of late summer. This year, many events are attracting attention, featuring up-and-coming artists, such as young choreographers and singers.

The 27th Seoul World Dance Festival, hosted by UNESCO International Dance Association Korea, will be held in various locations in Seoul from the 1st to the 14th of next month. Dewey Dell, the children of world-renowned performing artist Romeo Castellucci, will perform in Korea for the first time. The three siblings, all young dancers and choreographers in their 30s, will perform ‘Rite of Spring’ at the Daehakro Arts Theater Grand Theater in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 5th and 6th. A total of 16 works from 9 countries will be performed, including Goblin Party and Gambler Crew’s ‘Dongnebuk’, which will be performed at the same venue on the 11th of next month.

The Changmu International Performing Arts Festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, has as its main program ‘Running Now’ at the Sejong Arts Center. It has gathered eight works by young choreographers from Korea and abroad. ‘Slips Now’ by the Meta Dance Project, which deals with failure and overcoming, and ‘The Shape of the Battleship’ by Jang Yu-ah, which talks about the heartbreaking history of Gunhamdo, will be performed on the 20th and 21st, respectively. In addition, 19 domestically invited works and 5 overseas invited works from Japan, the United States, etc. will be performed from the 21st to the 31st of this month at Seoul Namsan Gugakdang in Jung-gu, Seoul, and Arko Arts Theater Grand Theater in Jongno-gu.

The Jeonju World Sori Festival will be held in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do from the 14th to the 18th of this month, and the traditional Korean music world will also be celebrating with young singers. A total of 800 artists from 14 countries will perform 106 times. The festival’s signature program, ‘Five Pansori Bases’, will feature five pieces themed on keywords such as ‘National Singer of the Year’ and ‘Rising Star’. In addition to pansori by master singers such as Kim Young-ja’s ‘Simcheongga’ and Wang Gi-seok’s ‘Sugungga’, you can also see performances by young singers such as Lee Ja-ram’s ‘Jeokbyeokga’ and Park Ga-bin’s ‘Chunhyangga’.
