Grain of sand in the keyboard

There are things that are only beautiful as a whole, hair for example. Taken out of context, the opposite picture emerges: that of a fly in the ointment. It’s the same with the beach or sand: everyone loves the sandy beach as a whole, but not individual grains of sand under their T-shirt or in bed afterwards. For me, this conflict comes to a head again: I have a dispute with exactly one grain of sand. It comes from Makryammos Bay on Thasos, where we spent the day, me and Agapimou.

We work in the vineyards of the island’s interior, and it’s fresher by the sea than in the mountains – a day’s break is worth its weight in gold. But what does break mean here? I had work to do, had the laptop with me and fully intend to finish two things, write some emails. Otherwise I’m sensitive when it comes to writing and need peace and quiet, but somehow it went really well this time and the words just flowed away. Until I suddenly read the sentence in an email that had already been sent: “The function flew away.” Obviously the autocorrection was at work and I was too careless to proofread again.

But what does the AI want to tell me, and what is a “belly here” – a very rare, obese tapir? Who flew away despite his body size? “Form follows function” it should have said, but the spaces were missing because, precisely, a grain of sand had crumbled under the space key and blocked it.

I can type, but I have a weakness in finishing (whether when writing or cleaning the bathroom): I always want to finish, send, and do things too quickly. Not to be efficient, but to keep things straight – in this case, to enjoy the beach and to keep Anne from getting sunburned. The sun on Thasos burns strongly, even through the clouds, the sand in Makryammos is very fine, very delicate – and a sun lounger as a workstation is rather prone to disruption. But could I have guessed that the disruptive fire would come from the sand of all things, a single (!) grain of sand? No, I wouldn’t have – all the blowing and even a hut doesn’t help: Makryammos means “Long Sand” – so it could take a little longer until the problem is solved.
