Gran Canaria is one of the best holiday destinations around the world for several reasons, it has some of the most stunning and beautiful beaches, nice weather, and a diverse landscape that is set apart by cliffs. Not only that, it’s home to intricate buildings and exciting attractions like Wooland. With so many things to do, it can be hard to fully embrace the best of the island, that’s why I’m here to lend you a hand!

Whether you are looking for a beach retreat or what to do in Gran Canaria, here are the top places on the island you need to check out.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The main tourist hub on the island is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, It’s a port city that welcomes a ton of cruises each year and offers a wide range of attractions and places to check out like Plaza de Santa Ana, and it is a stunning church or the Parque San Telmo, a unique park with an ornate art nouveau café, playgrounds and a pirate ship.

Not only that, but you can find a ton of different restaurants, bars, and vibrant buildings, Head to the Triana neighborhood, and enjoy a walk. Las Palmas also has some good beaches that are really close, like Las Cantaras Beach, or Las Alcaravaneras Beach.

Agaete Town

An often overlooked place on the Island is the Agaete, the town boasts beauty and interesting houses and buildings, making a simple walk worth it. Make sure to visit the old quarter and check out the Concepción Church and a small garden, Huerto de Las Flores, situated behind the church.

Next, you can visit Maipés necropolis, the most impactful archeological site on the island. It’s inside the locality and is really close, only a 4-minute ride from the town center. The site boasts an impressive and ancient cemetery with tombs sculpted into old lava.

The town is also home to stunning natural pools and is one of the best places to eat freshly caught fish.

Maspalomas Dunes

What most people don’t get is that Maspalomas is not only the dunes, in fact, it’s a whole town with other interesting attractions to check out. Of course, the dunes are a must-visit.

Maspalomas Dunes and town are situated to the south side of the island, the dunes itself are huge boasting 404 hectares, where you’ll find a landscape with interesting plants like palm groves and stunning views of the sea. It’s a great place to check out birds too, like snipes, plovers, and herons.

Not only that, you’ll find treks to hike like the Chemin de randonnée, and pristine beaches like El Veril, Playa del Ingles, and Playa de Maspalomas.

The area encompasses other attractions like HolidayWorld amusement park, which is an interesting park with many attractions and a wide range of activities suitable for the whole family. Other interesting landmarks are La Charca, which is a calm lagoon situated on the dunes, and the Maspalomas Lighthouse, a tall and slim lighthouse and museum that’s working since 1861.
