Granada Metro receives the first three Urbos 100 trains to expand its fleet

The order consists of a total of eight trains, which CAF will deliver in stages until April

Granada Metro has received the first three trains manufactured by CAF, of a total of eight new units planned for the expansion of the fleet. Now they must undergo different dynamic tests, both in workshops and garages and their track pool, and later on the line itself. In addition, the drivers will be trained and the subsequent authorization process for their commissioning will be carried out.

The eight new trains, whose manufacturing budget is 39.73 million euros, will be received in stages until April 2024, the date on which all deliveries will be completed. Between January and April of next year, the remaining five units for the expansion will be received, which will bring the total fleet to twenty-three trains.

This contract is co-financed with European React EU funds and will respond to passenger demand for the Granada Metro, which this year is reaching record numbers. With the new eight units, service provision will be significantly improved, both in frequency of passage – during rush hour it could go from the current interval of eight minutes to just six minutes – and in the increase in transport capacity, with 40 percent more. of seats, once the twenty-three units of the final fleet are operational.

Five modules

The new units of the Granada Metro are an evolution of the current series, Urbos 3, with which the current fleet is made up. The new trains have dimensions similar to the current ones, with a length of 33.05 meters and a maximum width of 2.65 meters. The ceiling height is 2.77 meters.

Each five-module vehicle has capacity for 209 seats, of which 52 are seated, with spaces for two people with reduced mobility, and the rest standing seats. Accessibility is guaranteed for both people with reduced mobility and baby strollers as it is a 100 percent low-floor train. Like the previous models, they are bidirectional and articulated units.

Likewise, they have on board the ACR system for circulation on sections without catenary, which allows traction energy savings of between 17 percent and 20 percent. The new trains maintain the corporate identity and design line of the current Granada Metro fleet, with some specific improvements. In addition, the elements that favor passenger comfort have been enhanced.
