Director Rita Baghdadi’s documentary ‘Sirens’ has received the Zinegoak Festival’s 2023 Grand Prize and the Audience Prize and the Senior Jury Prize went to Dania Bdeir’s short film ‘Warsha’. Most of the award winners of the Bilbao LGTBIQ+ film and performing arts festival are women – six out of the nine awards – and in the case of the most awarded feature films and short films, Lebanese realities have been the main protagonists.
According to the jury, the work ‘Sirens’, which captures the reality of Lebanon, “narrates a complex panorama, where political, social and cultural conflict is linked to the practices of the body, as an agent of change, forming the body as a place for desire, creativity, resistance and social transformation: they were created after the fall of the regime the mirror of dissent”. Thus, in addition to recognition in the DOK category, the documentary received a prize of 4,000 euros. In the same way, special mention has been made in the department of the work ‘Uyra, a retomada de floresta’ directed by Juliaca Cari, for “showing a cosmovision permeable to the context it films from a decolonial point of view”.
Julia Murat’s film ‘Regra 34’ was awarded in the FIK category; Theo Montoya’s ‘Anhell69’ in the KRAK section linked to new narratives; The short film ‘Perpetua felicidad’ by Isa Luengo and Sofia Esteve Santoja was highlighted by the youth jury; Human Right highlights the feature film ‘Tünde Skovranen Who I Am Not’; Regarding the prize for Lesbianism and Gender, the work ‘Casa Susanna’ has been selected; and Dania Bdeir’s short film ‘Warsha’ won a double award, the Audience Award and the Senior Jury Award.
In addition to that, as they have been informed by the organization, in the next few days it will be possible to see several works from the official series on the Filmin platform, including ‘Casa Susanna’, ‘Los agitadores’, ‘Regra 34’ or ‘De noche los gatos son pardos’. Finally, a retrospective of the honorary awardee Angelez Cruz will also be offered.
