Between action and science fiction, Cédric Ido’s second film tries to tear the suburbs away from the weight of realism but gets lost in awkwardness.

Two years ago, a first feature film named Gagarin by Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh made the large complexes of Ivry-sur-Seine take off into the stars, considering that science fiction and the destiny of a city on the verge of demolition had things to say to each other. A similar intuition guides the second film by Cédric Ido, born in Stains in Seine-Saint-Denis. To describe the broken social elevator in a district torn apart by drug trafficking, to accentuate the feeling of paralysis which nails its inhabitants to the ground, the filmmaker also opts for a cosmic parable. And places three childhood friends (one an athlete, the other a wheelchair dealer, the last ex-con) under the aegis of a planetary phenomenon that looks like the end of the world, igniting the sky and the rivalries that oppose them to a gang of bosses. The film and its comic book style emanate a recreational joy. The pleasure we take in it ourselves is unfortunately limited to this impression, and does not sit well with the naivety and clumsiness scattered along the way.

Gravity by Cédric Ido with Max Gomis, Jean-Baptiste Anoumon, Steve Tientcheu… 1 h 26.
