An inmate in a Styrian prison attacked a 33-year-old correctional officer with a specially prepared piece of glass on Thursday afternoon, leaving the uniformed staff member with moderate-to-severe neck injuries despite a protective vest.
The violent incident occurred shortly after 1:10 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, inside the Justizanstalt Graz-Karlau located in the Gries district of Graz. A 33-year-old inmate housed in the prison’s specialized execution-of-measures wing used the facility’s intercom system to summon an officer to his cell. When the guard, who was also 33 years old, entered the room, the inmate immediately launched a physical assault.
Modified Glass Blade Causes Severe Neck Laceration
Investigators examining the attack discovered that the weapon used had been specifically modified for the assault. The assailant had fitted a sharp glass shard with a rubber band designed to serve as a protective grip, allowing him to wield the improvised blade more effectively during the confrontation.

Although the correctional officer wore a stab-resistant vest, the protective equipment could not prevent the blade from reaching his neck. He sustained a serious laceration in the throat region that police and medical personnel classified as moderate to severe. Responding quickly to the disturbance, other correctional staff intervened, overpowered the inmate, and secured the cell block to bring the situation under control.
Hospitalization and Ongoing Investigation by the Styrian State Police
Following the attack, emergency services transported the injured staff member to a hospital for urgent medical treatment, where he remained under care. The case was immediately handed over to the Styrian State Criminal Police Office to direct the formal inquiry.
As state investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the breach in the high-security facility, authorities note that the exact motive behind the assault remains undetermined. The investigation continues under the principle of the presumption of innocence for the inmate involved.
