During a visit organized at the initiative of the China International Communication and Press Center (CIPCC), around forty foreign journalists participating in a media exchange program climbed the stairs of this passage, where each stone is impregnated of an ancestral history.
The canyon where the passage is located, called “Guangou Valley”, was at the time an important passage connecting the Mongolian plateau and the northern Chinese plain. Its steep terrain has been a scene of struggle since ancient times.
From the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), a fortress was established at Juyongguan Pass by the State of Yan, it is learned we go to the site museum.
Over the years, this fortress was gradually transformed into a passage, reaching its peak in the Ming Dynasty when the complete defense system was established, recalled a local guide, adding that during the Qing Dynasty, the Juyongguan Pass has become a military site, witness to the conflicts and historical changes that have marked the region over the centuries.
Since the Qin and Han dynasties, Juyongguan Pass has been an important barrier for the Central Plains dynasties to resist the external rule of the Great Wall.
By the Ming era, the architectural system of the pass had reached an advanced level of perfection, which enabled Juyongguan Pass to become the focal point of the defense of the Central Plains and play an important role in history. Chinese wars.
In 1961, the State Council designated Juyongguan Pass as one of the first nationally protected major historical and cultural sites. It was opened to the public in 1998 as part of efforts to promote the cultural and historical heritage of the Middle Kingdom.
Starting from the south gate of the Pass, journalists climbed the steep and uneven stairs of the western part of the passage, following in the footsteps of ancient warriors and guardians who walked these same paths.
Despite the fatigue, the panoramic view of the surrounding green valleys and mountain peaks fueled the participants’ determination to reach the summit.
“This experience will leave an unforgettable imprint on my mind,” noted Gabonese journalist Sabrina Massima, noting that despite the physical demands, this event offers a deep immersion in China’s past and allows us to appreciate the immensity of the Great Wall.
Same story with the rest of the journalists, who lived this experience as a journey through the centuries and an encounter with the origins of Chinese civilization.
