Greater Manchester Braces for Flooding as Torrential Rain Prompts Flood Alerts

Residents across Greater Manchester and parts of northern England were urged too exercise extreme caution as torrential rain led to rising river levels and the issuance of multiple flood alerts.Authorities issued the warnings following a weekend of heavy rainfall that brought rivers close to capacity.

As of 6 p.m. on saturday, September 20, 2025, six flood alerts were in effect across Greater Manchester, signaling that flooding was possible and residents should begin preparations. A more severe flood warning – indicating that flooding was expected – was issued at 9 p.m. that evening for Worsley Brook at Alder Forest Bridge and the Cricket Grounds.

  • The River Bolin around Bollington and parts of Altrincham, Macclesfield, Knutsford, and Wilmslow.
  • The River Mersey around Hyde, Ashton, Denton, stalybridge, and glossop.
  • Upper River Douglas from Horwich Star Vale to Appley Bridge.

A senior official with the Environment Agency emphasized the potential for widespread disruption, stating that “widespread rainfall with isolated heavy bursts could lead to some notable river flooding across parts of the Northwest and some significant surface water flooding and minor river flooding across parts of the north of England and the Midlands from Saturday into Sunday morning.”

Safety Precautions and Resources

The Environment Agency deployed teams to support local authorities and mitigate the impact of flooding. Individuals were strongly advised to take personal responsibility for their safety. Authorities urged the public to stay away from swollen rivers and, critically, not to drive through flood water. Even a shallow depth of just 30 centimeters of flowing water is sufficient to sweep a vehicle away.
