The Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Evangelos Skris, in a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed Athens’ complete opposition to Libya’s claims regarding the borders of its maritime areas.

The permanent representative of Greece indicated that the alleged eastern maritime borders of Libya violate the Greek exclusive economic zone defined in accordance with international law under the agreement between Greece and Egypt to demarcate the exclusive economic zone between the two countries signed on August 6, 2020.

Skris reaffirmed that the Turkish-Libyan maritime border memorandum signed in 2019 is illegal and null in terms of international law and the Libyan political agreement in 2015, which also requires the ratification of the House of Representatives.

The Greek representative said that these allegations by Libya constitute a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to peace and stability in the Mediterranean, and that Athens is still ready to resolve its disputes with all neighboring countries in the eastern Mediterranean.

Skris stated that while Greece retains all its rights under international law, it remains firmly committed to resolving any border demarcation issue with neighboring countries in the eastern Mediterranean by peaceful means, in good faith and in accordance with the law of the sea, as it has already done with Italy and Egypt.
