Greece supports efforts to increase the capacity of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB).

This was stated by Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy of Greece Alexandra Sduku in her speech at the 10th meeting of the Advisory Council of the Southern Gas Corridor in Baku, Day.Az reported on Tuesday with reference to the ministry.

“Greece supports the expansion of TAP and IGB. These two infrastructures are crucial for the diversification of gas sources and export routes in South-Eastern Europe,” Sduku said.

The Deputy Minister emphasized Greece’s commitment to strengthening the region’s energy security through the development of critical gas transmission networks.

She also mentioned the need for hydrogen supplies through the Southern Gas Corridor, highlighting its importance for the long-term sustainability of the project. Sduku added that Greece is in favor of supplying hydrogen and other renewable gases through existing infrastructure, along with the creation of new hydrogen capacity.

It should be noted that via TAP, which is the European part of the Southern Gas Corridor, eight billion cubic meters of gas are supplied annually to Italy and one billion cubic meters of gas each to Greece and Bulgaria.

On December 31, 2020, supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Europe along the Southern Gas Corridor began. Through the TAP, Azerbaijan exported its natural gas to the European market via pipelines for the first time in history. With direct access to the European market, which is the world’s largest importer of natural gas, Azerbaijan has diversified its export opportunities.

The Greece-Bulgaria interconnector began commercial deliveries on October 1, 2022.

The contract volume of gas supplies to Bulgaria via this interconnector is 1 billion cubic meters per year. The total capacity of the IGB is 3 billion cubic meters, expandable to 5 billion cubic meters per year.

Increasing the capacity of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector over 5 billion cubic meters of gas is possible through the construction of an additional gas pipeline.
