The Greek authorities announced today measures to help the remaining homeless citizens following the catastrophic fires near Athens in recent days, while the country’s European partners offer help to deal with the deadly flames, DPA reported.

Private homes, company buildings and farms across an area of about 100 square kilometers were destroyed or severely damaged after strong winds fueled the devastating flames on Sunday.

The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has come up with a plan for direct financial assistance of up to 10,000 euros for people whose homes are affected or destroyed, writes BTA.

Assessors have already started work in the affected areas. Companies and farms will also receive aid, including interest-free loans.

Firefighters in Greece battled scattered blazes today hoping to contain the remains of a large forest fire that broke out in the northern suburbs of Athens and prompted multiple evacuations and the death of a 60-year-old worker from Moldova.

Strong winds that fueled the flames on Sunday and Monday died down overnight, and the Greek fire service said the fire no longer had active advancing fronts and firefighters were focusing on extinguishing hundreds of slow-burning areas.
