Theodoros Tselidis made history and kicked off Greece’s participation in the Paris Olympics. But who is the famous Greek judoka who fought and won the bronze medal, which is simultaneously the third in the history of the country in the judo event?

Theodoros Tselidis (Fedor Nikolayevich Tselid, born in North Ossetia in August 1996, from a Greek father—a fact that helped him easily acquire Greek citizenship along the way). He has two siblings, George and Marina.

He graduated in 2019 with a degree in Global Economics from North Ossetian State University located in Russia.

His hobbies include History and video games, and his ambition was to win an Olympic medal—something he has just achieved—as stated in his profile on the official Olympic Games website.

He speaks three languages: Greek, Russian, and English.

His Philosophy

In the interview he gave last March, he mentioned the influence of the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, “because he is one of the best poets.”

His Athletic Career

Theodoros started practicing judo at the age of 15 in the city of Vladikavkaz, Russia, because “he wanted to try something new,” as he stated in an interview in March 2024.

Since 2018, he has represented Greece in international judo competitions. At first, he competed as a Greco-Roman wrestler and later in the martial art of sambo and judo.

In 2017, he reached the final of the Russian Judo Championship and won the title of vice-champion in Russia. In April 2018, he made his debut with the Greek national team at the Georgian Grand Prix under the name Theodoros Tselidis.

In 2018, he won a bronze medal for Greece at the European Judo Championship. He also secured a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in 2018.

On July 31, 2024, Theodoros Tselidis won the bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris in the 90 kg category.
