The Greek team now faces two derbies in the first phase, which will determine its rankings and upcoming opponents, starting with the match against the world champion Croatia on Saturday, August 3, at 13:05, followed by the match against Italy on Monday, August 5, at 16:10.

Stelios Argyropoulos and Giannis Fountoulis scored the last six Greek goals and “signed” the victory, with Mano Zerdevas recovering after a serious mistake at the end of the first period, finishing the match with 16 saves, many of which were impressive.

Unlike the previous two games, the national team showed a willingness to swim quickly, in order to exploit the problematic returns of the Americans (who are faster but take longer to organize). In this way, the internationals found a goal on the counter with Vlachos and a penalty awarded to Argyropoulos, which Genidounias converted, taking a lead of 4-2. However, Bowen reduced the score with a penalty, and at the end of the first quarter, goalkeeper Weinberg scored from one goal to another (!), to equalize at 4-4.

The Zerdevas had obvious responsibility in this goal but quickly made amends with two great saves during a phase with a numerical disadvantage. The representative team had an attack with two players up but found a goal with a tremendous effort from Nikolaidis from 2m. The Greek team again moved to +2 (6-4 and 7-5), but in the last seconds of the first half, the referees called a penalty against Zerdevas in a ball contest with Halock (while the defense had effectively come out), and Babic reduced it to 7-6.

The USA found two quick goals in the third quarter, both taking rebounds after Zerdevas’s saves, and took the lead 8-7. Argyropoulos interrupted the American streak with a penalty, and then he and Fountoulis with consecutive goals on a man-up brought the national team to +2 (11-9) at the end of the third quarter. The two Greek internationals continued to “execute” in the last period and, combined with the Americans’ inability to capitalize on the exclusions they earned (1/12 overall), the “blue-and-white” solidified their lead and secured victory, ensuring a ticket to the quarter-finals.
