As of yesterday in Chania on the island of Crete, the celebrations began for one of the “most anticipated weddings in Greece”, as some Greek media defined the ceremony between Stefanos Kaselakis, leader of the largest Greek opposition party, the left-wing SYRIZA, and the American doctor Tyler McBeth.

Although in February of this year Greece adopted a law that introduced the possibility of civil marriage for same-sex couples, on the island of Crete the two will not marry, as they already did in October 2023 in New York, but will only exchange vows of love.

As reported by “Proto Theme”, cited by BTA, the four-day celebrations started last night at a popular restaurant in the old port of Chania, where Kaselakis is from, and will continue until August 31. However, the apogee of the celebrations in the coming days will be at the Cretan Botanical Garden – a 200-acre park built after a devastating fire in 2003.

There, on August 30, Kaselakis and Macbeth will exchange their vows in front of about 130 guests. They will be treated to selected dishes from the local Cretan cuisine such as lamb, cheeses, the famous local pie maratopita, honey, local wines and more.

As the portal “Athens Voice” writes, after the ceremony, the guests will go to “the most beautiful villa in the area”, where the reception will be held in the greenery of a garden with a pool of 140 square meters and a view of the sea and Souda Bay.

Kaselakis and Macbeth reportedly did not want cameras at their Greek wedding, so strict measures were taken to ensure the private nature of the event. The site Flashnews.gr reports that anti-drone systems have even been activated that could film the party from the air. In addition to the couple’s 25-strong bodyguard, there is also an increased police presence in the celebration area. The cellphones of guests, as well as employees of the restaurants and entertainment venues Kaselakis, Macbeth and their guests will be visiting, will even be taken, it is said.

“Proto Topic” recalls that the last time Greece witnessed a wedding of a sitting political leader was in 1989, when the then PASOK leader and until recently Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou married his third wife, Dimitra Liani.
