If you enjoy sweetening your unsweetened Greek yogurt or plain yogurt with a spoonful of honey, that’s a good choice.

Honey has been shown to play a role in increasing the survival period of beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

“We were interested in the combination of yogurt and honey, which is common in the Mediterranean diet, and how that affects the microbiome that lives in the human gastrointestinal tract,” said Hannah Holscher, a professor in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences in Illinois.

According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, Greek yogurt and other yogurts contain probiotic strains, such as Bifidobacterium animalis, in addition to the original cultures. Consuming certain probiotics may promote digestive health and regular bowel movements, and may have a positive effect on mood and cognition.

Enzymes secreted from the human mouth, stomach, and intestines help digestion and promote nutrient absorption, but they also reduce the survival of microorganisms. This can be beneficial if the microorganism is a pathogen, but the opposite is true if it is a beneficial bacteria.

The researchers wanted to see if honey could help beneficial bacteria survive in the gut.

In a two-week experiment with 66 healthy adults, combining honey and yogurt helped the beneficial bacteria in yogurt survive in the intestines. No negative changes were found. It showed almost the same effect as consuming yogurt alone.

The research team repeated the same experiment with added sugar, and when comparing the results of the three conditions (yogurt alone, yogurt + honey, yogurt + sugar), the yogurt with honey had the highest survival rate of beneficial bacteria.

“We found that adding a spoonful of honey to yogurt helped support the survival of beneficial microbes in the human body,” said Professor Holscher. “However, honey is an added sugar, so it is important to be mindful of your sugar intake to maintain a healthy weight,” he said. “However, adding a little honey to unsweetened yogurt is a good combination.”
