Like many artists, Green Day used their platform to voice political solidarity, specifically with residents of Minnesota, during a concert Saturday night. The band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, altered lyrics to reflect current events, swapping “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” for “I’m not part of a MAGA agenda” during a performance of American Idiot at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
Before launching into Holiday and Know Your Enemy, Armstrong directly addressed Stephen Miller, a senior advisor to the former president. “This song is antifasciste. This song is against the war. We stand with our brothers and sisters in Minnesota… Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Miller has the floor,” he declared to cheers from the audience.
Miller is known as the architect of Donald Trump’s immigration policies, which involved deploying agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to target and deport immigrants.
This public statement comes as Green Day prepares to perform at the pre-game ceremonies for the upcoming Super Bowl on February 8 in Santa Clara.
