The federal election is still over a year away, but the parties are already getting ready. Now Green Party leader Ricarda Lang has provided clarity on the candidate question.

The Green Party leader, Ricarda Lang, spoke in an interview about the election tactics for 2025. They want to go into the federal election campaign next year “with one person at the top”. This will help the party “both in terms of trust and clarity,” Lang said on Sunday in the ZDF “Summer Interview”. After the withdrawal of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, she sees “nobody” other than Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck for this role, Lang continued. However, the question will not be finally decided until later in the year.

It is still an open question whether the Greens will explicitly nominate a male or female candidate for chancellor, given the weak poll ratings they have had for months. However, the times “when only parties with 30 percent can do that” are over, stressed Lang. “Then we would have exactly one candidate for chancellor,” she said, referring to the CDU/CSU, which is currently leading the polls by a wide margin. “That would not be so good for democracy.”

The roughly 13 percent that the Greens received in the latest polls “cannot be where we stand,” added Lang. Regarding a possible coalition, Lang said with a view to the re-election of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU), whom the Greens had supported: “We as Greens have proven that we are reliable partners.”
