The plenary session of the Senate of the Republic elected Gregorio Eljach as the new Attorney General of the Nation for the period 2025-2029, replacing Margarita Cabello Blanco.
Eljach, former secretary general of the Senate and lawyer by profession, obtained 95 of the 103 votes castclearly prevailing in the selection process.
Before the vote, the Senate plenary rejected more than 90 impediments presented by different legislators, allowing all senators to be eligible to participate in the election. In addition to the 95 votes obtained by Eljach, other candidates received marginal support: Luis Felipe Henao obtained 3 votes, Germán Varón 2 votes and there were 3 blank votes.

The message from the new attorney
After being elected, Eljach expressed his gratitude to the senators for the trust placed in his ability to lead the Attorney General’s Office. «I sincerely appreciate the vote of confidence that the sovereign plenary has just placed in me by electing me attorney general. In the same sense, I want to thank and recognize all the parties, coalitions and significant groups of citizens,” he declared in his speech before the Senate.
The new attorney highlighted the democratic nature of the election, describing it as “a triumph of consensus, a triumph of unity in diversity, a triumph of democracy.” Likewise, he stressed the importance of the independence and autonomy of the branches of public power and control bodies, pillars that he assured he will defend during his mandate.
In his speech, Gregorio Eljach was emphatic in pointing out that one of the main objectives of his administration will be to combat corruption,making it clear that he will focus his mandate on strengthening transparency and integrity in the exercise of public power.
Oath and taking possession
The president of the Senate, Efraín Cepeda, was in charge of taking the oath to Eljach at the close of the election process. At the ceremony, the new attorney committed to comply with the constitutional and legal mandates that regulate his position that will govern in the period 2025 – 2029.
