In a recent interview, Gerwig shared her initial reaction to the idea of using special effects for Barbie’s feet, calling it “terrifying” and a “nightmare.”
Speaking on Australia’s “The Project,” Gerwig explained that there was initially a discussion about whether to CGI all of the doll’s feet. However, she quickly dismissed the idea, stating, “Oh god, no! That’s terrifying! That’s a nightmare.” Gerwig also praised the actress playing Barbie, Margot Robbie, for having “beautiful dancer feet.”
Instead of relying on CGI, Gerwig came up with a creative solution. She revealed that Robbie would “hang on to” a bar off-camera to maintain Barbie’s arched feet. This approach helped to maintain the authenticity and aesthetic that fans of the iconic doll have come to love.
Fans got a sneak peek of Barbie’s arched feet in the movie’s main trailer, where Robbie’s character is seen stepping out of a pair of pink heels in her Dream House. Despite being out of her shoes, Barbie’s feet remain perfectly arched. The trailer also showcases a point of conflict where Barbie’s feet become un-arched, causing shock and horror among the other Barbies in Barbie Land.
Gerwig previously discussed the creation of the pink and highly-stylized world of Barbie, expressing her desire to make the audience feel like they could “reach onto the screen and touch everything.” She hopes that the movie will evoke nostalgia and remind viewers of their childhood experiences of standing in a toy store, gazing at Barbie encased in a plastic box and longing to touch and play with everything.
