Greta Thunberg Accused of Antisemitism by Israeli Officials

Greta Thunberg, the 20-year-old climate activist, faced accusations of being a “terror supporter” by Israeli officials after posting pro-Palestinian messages on social media. The controversy stemmed from a photo she shared on her social media accounts, which initially featured a toy octopus, a known antisemitic trope.

In the photo, Thunberg is seen holding a “Stand with Gaza” sign along with three friends, one of whom is holding a “Free Palestine” sign. The presence of the toy octopus in the photo drew backlash, as it is a symbol often used in anti-Jewish propaganda since its use in a Nazi-era cartoon.

Thunberg later deleted the photo and replaced it with a similar one, removing the offensive symbol. She protested innocence, claiming she was unaware of the symbolism behind the toy octopus. Thunberg explained that the toy is often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings, and she identified herself as being on the autism spectrum.

Despite her explanation, Israeli officials condemned Thunberg for her messaging and solidarity with Palestine. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Arye Sharuz Shalicar referred to anyone who supports Thunberg as a “terror supporter,” accusing her of ignoring the violence committed by Hamas and Islamic Jihad against Israelis.

The controversy also drew criticism from other officials and individuals who accused Thunberg of failing to condemn Hamas or express solidarity for the Israelis who have been victims of violence. However, Shalicar later clarified that his comments did not reflect his personal views or those of the IDF.

Background: The Worst Attack on Israel in 50 Years

The backlash against Thunberg’s pro-Palestinian stance comes at a time when Hamas has launched the biggest attack on Israel in 50 years. The conflict began with Hamas firing rockets into Israeli towns, prompting Israel to launch a military offensive against Gaza. The violence resulted in over 1,400 Israelis dead, more than 4,200 wounded, and at least 100 taken hostage.

During the conflict, horrific videos emerged showing Hamas terrorists parading female hostages down the street. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel was at war and vowed to make Hamas pay a price it has never known. On the Palestinian side, Gaza health officials reported at least 3,000 Palestinians killed and over 12,500 injured.

Thunberg’s controversy comes just days after she was arrested at an anti-oil protest in London. She was charged with a public order offense and released on bail until her upcoming court hearing in November.

Amid escalating tensions and the ongoing conflict, Greta Thunberg’s statements and actions continue to spark debate and controversy worldwide.
