The tournament in Rome is very special for me. I like everything – the city, the courts, and the people.
The confession belongs to Grigor Dimitrov. And in the Italian capital they also love the best Bulgarian tennis player in history. The former No. 3 in the world is one of the stars in a short film about the tournament in the “Masters 1000” category. The video also features Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and showcases some of the countless historical landmarks in the Eternal City.
As the #8 seed, Dimitrov starts straight from the second round and will play Yoshihito Nishioka (Yap), who has eliminated Sebastian Ofner (Av).
When asked if he was proud that at one point he was the only one in the top 10 to perform a one-handed backhand, Grigor replied: “I felt a little strange. But it’s not bad,” said our tennis player.
I have participated in two red court tournaments so far. I had a few match points in Monte Carlo, but luck was not on my side. In Madrid I didn’t perform as I wanted, but I didn’t feel very well either.
Maybe I was a little more tired than expected. I have to accept things as they are. Not to lose, let’s not say my faith, but to do something about my confidence in the game on this floor. There are a few more tournaments on red courts and that will be my goal. But you can always drop out early, that’s our sport. Sometimes you have to lower your expectations”, said Grigor in a TV interview.
In a conversation with Super Tennis, Dimitrov shared that his recent good results are due to the fact that he always believed in his abilities, but also in good work. If you’re not obsessed with something, not just tennis, you can’t be among the best in the world.
I like to say that hard work beats talent, but talent helps you win”, Dimitrov believes.
