Grosseto Hospital Sees Vertebral Artery in 3D with New Method – Health & Wellness

(ANSA) – GROSSETO, 13 AUG – A new diagnostic technique applied at the Misericordia hospital in Grosseto on a patient who presented symptoms of confusion has allowed for a unique test in Italy, namely an OCT (Optical coherence tomography) in a vertebral artery. An innovative technique, explains the ASL Toscana Sud est, which has allowed for obtaining a diagnostic result of great interest. It is a method that is normally adopted for examinations of the coronary arteries, but which has also proven to be particularly effective for the vertebral artery.
The case examined, which will also be the subject of a scientific publication, involved a 70-year-old with symptoms similar to fainting and confusion, who had already undergone AngioTac and Ecocolor Doppler. The patient needed further diagnostic refinement. Through this examination it was possible to obtain very high definition images, with a three-dimensional video of the artery useful for searching for lesions deriving from plaques to be correlated with the clinical symptoms.
“The case studied in Grosseto – comments Massimo Pieraccini, director of Interventional Radiology at the Misericordia hospital – highlights the importance of the research we are carrying out in our hospital and the multidisciplinary approach of our action”. “We managed to bring the device inside the vertebral artery, overcoming many difficulties”, explains interventional neuroradiologist Valerio Lunghi who performed the procedure. “The implementation of this new method – says Manuele Bartalucci, doctor of Neurology at Grosseto – has allowed us to prevent the onset of stroke, all of which occurred with the synergy of our colleagues in the Emergency Department who give us the possibility of carrying out short hospitalizations. Since the beginning of the year we have managed more than 500 ‘Stroke’ pathways, fibrinolysis and endovascular treatments”.
Other patients to undergo this new interventional modality are already scheduled on the waiting list.
