Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won the sprint on day five of the 2023 Giro d’Italia, made up of 171 kilometers from Atripalda until Salerno. The Australian was the fastest in an abnormal packing due to the multiple falls in the final segment. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) suffered two incidents.

The day got off to a rocky start with an early fall by Remco Evenepoel (SOQ), who fell to the ground because of a dog that crossed the road. Luckily, an incident that did not become major, since the world champion recovered normally and resumed the march to continue without problems.

Bathed in heavy rain, a getaway quartet was formed. Thomas Champion (COF), Samuele Zoccarato (GBF), Stefano Gandin (COR) and Thibaut Pinot (GFC), who only entered the cut with the intention of accumulating the points of the first categorized level and thus extending his lead in the fight for the Azure. Once he fulfilled that purpose, he dropped down to be absorbed by the main group.

The peloton was controlled by the sprinter teams, who by mutual agreement decided not to tighten the rope despite the broken terrain that, with intensity, could perfectly wreak havoc on the purest sprinters.

From there, nothing to report on a boring journey for the spectator, but suffocating for the cyclists who had to deal with the adverse weather and the stress of competing on wet asphalt that makes them more prone to falls.

Of course, catching the escape would not be a piece of cake. In the final 20 km, Zoccarato was at the head of the race alone and had 1’05” on a lot that, realizing the rent, had to put his foot on the accelerator so as not to have any surprises.

Praiseworthy effort from Bardiani’s Italian, who, in any case, knew it was difficult to crown. He held them off as long as he could and was neutralized with 7,000 meters to go.

And just at that moment, in what was the last corner of the day, a fall cut off a large part of the peloton and affected protagonists. Fernando Gaviria was left with the damaged bicycle and therefore out of contention. Pascal Ackermann, another sprinter involved.

But mainly, Primoz Roglic was the one who experienced the tension, as he was also cut off and, in fact, had to use the bicycle of one of his teammates (Bouwman) to return to the best group as soon as possible. Fortunately, he would make it with 4 km to go.

However, it would not be the end of the chaos. At 2,500 meters Evenepoel suffered a second fall, which, being within the final 3 km, would not cost him time, but still, he would accumulate a day to forget.

Already with a very small and bruised group, there was a chaotic sprint in which Mark Cavendish fell on the finish, which Kaden Groves dominated over Jonathan Milan, this being the second success of an Australian so far in a career that today was crazy -for bad-.

Tomorrow, another theoretical chance for the fastest, who will have to overcome a 162-kilometre route around Naples, which if run in the same way as today, will guarantee a battle between the experts of mass arrivals. Pronto You can access more details and predictions in the PREVIOUS SECTION.
