You must have seen a lot of saffron cultivation in Kashmir, but now 64 year old engineer Ramesh Gera is growing saffron in a small room in Noida. He is not only earning well from this, but is also teaching others to grow saffron indoors.

After doing electrical engineering from NIT Kurukshetra in the year 1980, Ramesh worked in very large scale multinational companies. During his tenure of 35 years, he got the opportunity to visit many countries of the world.

The Better India Speaking to , Ramesh said, “When I went to South Korea for 6 months in the year 2002, I saw advanced farming techniques like hydroponic farming, microgreens, polyhouse engineering and saffron cultivation during my weekend getaway and I was quite impressed by it. ”

Seeing the advanced farming techniques in South Korea, Ramesh thought why not take these techniques to India as well. Along with his work, he learned these farming techniques in Korea for 6 months and came back and created a complete setup to grow saffron in a 100 square feet room in Sector 63, Noida.

How much did it cost to set up the saffron cultivation setup and how much is the benefit?

The cost of this work was about 4 lakhs and Ramesh ordered seeds worth 2 lakhs from Kashmir. He said, “Only 30% of the demand for saffron in India comes from Kashmir, the remaining 70% is imported from Iran. This gap between demand and supply is a huge market in itself.

Saffron farming does not require a lot of manpower, even a member of the household can handle this business comfortably. Ramesh Gera said, “There is no monthly expenditure other than the electricity bill, only for 4 months when we keep the system switched on, at that time the electricity bill comes to about 4 to 4.5 thousand rupees per month. After that we switch it off.

He further said, “Saffron is sold at a very good rate, if you want to sell it in wholesale, you can easily sell it at Rs. 3.50 lakh/kg in gram packets and if exported, you can earn up to Rs.6 lakh/kg.

Ramesh runs a training center named ‘Attractive Saffron Institute’ in Noida itself and has so far taught this technique of growing saffron to 105 people.
