Rockstar Games revealed new gameplay systems for Grand Theft Auto 6, confirming that playable characters Jason and Lucia can text, call, and build a romantic relationship ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rob Nelson Details Relationship System and Character Intimacy
Nelson discussed the introduction of a dedicated relationship system that operates independently from the game’s criminal tracking systems. Players can choose to nurture a romance through shared activities such as kayaking and mini-golf, or simply by committing robberies together.
However, the game does not force romance onto players who prefer a strictly professional dynamic. Could we bring some sort of emotional resonance to GTA for people if they wanted to engage with it?
Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they’re not into it?
If they feel like, ‘I don’t want a relationship in this?’ That’s what we’re going to find out.
“Whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that. They will still work together. It’s really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out. Whether you’ve nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out.”

Physical intimacy will also be featured as a component of the partnership. Nelson noted that intimacy is a major part of relationships, though the exact mechanics are not final prior to release. International ratings and the ESRB rating indicate the title will include nudity, strong sexual content, and sex scenes, while past controversies like the Hot Coffee mod from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remain a part of franchise history.

In-Game Texting and Unplanned Encounters Expand Player Choices
Communication between the two protagonists has been expanded through in-game messaging systems. According to RockstarINTEL, players can text and call Jason or Lucia whenever they control the other character.
Lucia might text Jason a response such as Sweet, I’ll come to you.
Ignoring communications or going all day apart can negatively affect their connection, such as failing to reply when one partner texts to check in before bed.
During a gameplay demonstration, Nelson showcased an unplanned encounter with a man inside a dumpster. Players can choose to provide the man with pills or ignore him entirely; returning later yields legal advice and an option to enter the dumpster alongside him, as detailed by RockstarINTEL.
Naked Shower Scene Generates Online Discussion Prior to Release
Directly following the dumpster encounter, the demonstration switched player control to Jason, who was naked and taking a shower, confirming that the title features shower scenes with nudity, as reported by RockstarINTEL and Kotaku. IGN preview writer Rachel Weber described the sequence by noting, [At this point Nelson switches to Jason’s POV, where our hero is… naked.]

Although initial preview coverage left the exact visual details ambiguous, Weber later clarified on social media that she did not observe full frontal anatomy during her specific viewing of the sequence, leaving final confirmation for players when the game arrives next month, according to Kotaku.
