Steve Kestler is nominated for Best Chef at the 2024 James Beard Awards
Steve Kestler it’s a Guatemalan chef who went from working for well-known Las Vegas restaurants to have his own restaurant in this city, the largest in the state of Nevada. Aroma Latin American Cocina is the name of his restaurant and together with this he managed to be one of the five nominated for Best Chef in the prestigious Premios James Beard 2024
The Guatemalan’s nomination places him in the company of Rene Andrade, Jeff Chanchaleune, Steve Riley and Eduardo Rodríguez, prominent chefs from the southwest of the United States, a region that includes the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona.
Los James Beard Foundation Awards, established in 1991, are recognized as one of the leading honors in the field of American gastronomy. More than simply celebrating culinary excellence, the awards also recognize exceptional hospitality in restaurants, as well as achievements in categories ranging from baking to food journalism.
The award is named after James Beard, who was one of the most influential chefs and food writers in the history of American gastronomy. He was a pioneer in promoting cuisine that reflected the cultural diversity of the United States, and he played a fundamental role in raising the reputation of his country’s cuisine internationally. He also wrote books, taught several generations of chefs and hosted a television show.
On Monday, June 10, we will meet the winners of the different categories of this award at the awards ceremony that will take place at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The Guatemalan who went from owning a chapín food truck to owning a restaurant
After moving to the United States at age 23, the Guatemalan honed his craft at notable Las Vegas restaurants such as Bazaar Meat by José Andrés, Edo Gastro Tapas & Wine and Bouchon. However, his true dream was to bring his own culinary vision to the world.
In 2020, the chef took a bold step by founding the Maize St food truck with Frank Medina, which offered Latin American food with Guatemalan touches. This was the first step towards his own restaurant, Aroma Latin American Cocina, where he continues to offer a menu of Latin American dishes in which the Guatemalan flavor cannot be missing.
Steve Kestler’s accomplishments and story inspire us as he went from owning a food truck to own his own restaurant in Las Vegas, one of the main tourist attractions in the United States, and now to be considered among the best chefs in the United States.
