José Miguel Echeverría distinguished himself as one of the most talented baristas in Guatemala by being crowned the best of 10 Guatemalans who participated in the National Competition for Baristas, Brewers and Tasters 2024 which took place in February. The title of National Barista Champion 2024 It earned him his participation in the international competition to be held from May 1 to 4 in Busan, South Korea.

A Guatemalan passionate about one of the best coffees in the world, Guatemalan coffee

The Guatemalan has made the art of preparing coffee his profession. During his career he has traveled to several countries preparing this drink and learning new techniques. As indicated on the website of his coffee shop, José Miguel Echeverría returned to Guatemala to contribute to the culture of domestic coffee consumption and create a space where other Guatemalans can be highlighted and trained. He has achieved this with Teco Coffee House, a coffee shop with a laboratory and roastery located at 13 Calle 4-44 Zona 10 in Guatemala City, which he co-founded with Salomé Puentes.

He has been crowned national barista champion twice, in the 2014 and 2024 competition. In an interview before his trip to South Korea, the Guatemalan commented that it is “a pride for him to represent Guatemala” in this competition. which he describes as a soccer World Cup, only in the preparation of coffee.

About the competition format

In addition to celebrating coffee culture, the World Barista Championship is a platform for brewing experts from around the world to showcase their talent and creativity on the global stage. During the event, competitors have the opportunity to prepare a variety of coffee drinks, including espressos, lattes and signature drinks, in front of a panel of expert judges who evaluate every aspect of their performance.

The competition is divided into several rounds. The fifteen competitors with the most points advance to the semifinals, while only six qualify for the final, of which only one will be able to obtain the title of World Barista Champion.
