A group of Guatemalans will represent Guatemala at the Tokyo STEAM championship —Tokyo STEAM Championship—, organized by Coded-Coding Education. This organization specializes in technological academic development and STEAM —Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Mathematics—of students in different parts of the world.
The young Guatemalans are students of the EPIC school and won their pass to this exclusive jurisdiction in Japan when obtaining the Second place in the programming and science competition during the STEAM League Orlando 2024, held in Orlando, Florida, United States. This event, held from July 21 to 29, brought together 209 students from 25 schools from 10 different countries, with Epic School being the only representative from Guatemala.
The road to second place in a science and programming competition
During their participation in the STEAM League Orlando 2024, young people took part in interactive and dynamic activities that allowed them to learn about the application of geometry, physics and mathematics in the creation of iconic digital characters. These activities were led by experts and professionals from renowned studios such as Disney Codeillusion, Universal Studios, Six Pixels Studios and NASA, among others.
In addition to the learning activities, the students also participated in an international Theme Park Design competition. This competition required the teams to create a collaborative and creative project, integrating the knowledge acquired during the week. The Guatemalans stood out with their projects Maya’s Adventure Park and Dream Townwhich earned them second place in the senior category. These projects not only demonstrated their mastery in the five areas of STEAM knowledge, but also incorporated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The challenge in Tokyo
The Tokyo competition, scheduled for August 2025, will represent a new challenge for these young talents. For 10 to 14 days, students aged 12 to 17, winners of competitions in Europe and Orlando, will meet in Japan to compete in a series of tests that will put their STEAM knowledge and skills to the test.
Participants will not only compete, but will also have the opportunity to explore Japan’s rich culture, visiting everything from traditional landmarks to sites that reflect the country’s technological leadership. In the final phase of the event, participants will work on a project designed to solve a real-life problem that benefits their community. The winning team will receive a cash prize to execute their project, allowing them to turn their idea into a tangible reality.
Young Guatemalans who have shone internationally
Guatemala has been the birthplace of many talented young people who have excelled on international stages. Among them, Santiago Martínez, who represented the country at the 2024 World Olympiad of Young Mathematicians, where he won a silver medal. Another inspiring example is Jonathan Toj, selected to participate in the United Space School, a prestigious program supported by NASA and held in Texas, United States.
Also, in May 2024, a group of students from Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez, stood out in an English debate competition in Mexico. Competing against young people from 14 Latin American countries, the Guatemalans managed to place among the top three teams. How cool!
