“A year ago my chest hurt and they discovered that I had a tumor next to my heart, but thanks to the doctors at this hospital they operated on me and I go home feeling very good,” said the beneficiary Karelis G.

The Hospital de Especialidades Guayaquil Dr. Abel Gilbert Pontón, an establishment of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), successfully removed a giant tumor that was attached to vascular structures of the mediastinum (between the heart and the most important vessels of the body) of Karelis, a 22-year-old patient.

This giant teratoma was causing severe chest pain and difficulty breathing. For this reason, the cavities of the heart were compressed and collapsed, causing heart failure.

The technique applied for this intervention was a median sternotomy; a surgical procedure in which a vertical incision is made in a line along the sternum. The operation lasted approximately three hours.

The highly complex operation was performed by a multidisciplinary team made up of a cardiothoracic surgeon and two generals, an instrumentalist, two anesthesiologists, two nurses, and an assistant.

It is important to note that this type of surgery at the private level has an approximate cost of between 30 and 35 thousand dollars, while the MSP offers it totally free.

Patients who access this type of surgery must be evaluated and assessed by a multidisciplinary group of specialists; likewise, imaging and laboratory studies should be performed.

The Guayaquil Hospital performs cardiac surgeries on patients with mediastinal tumors, lesions in blood vessels, pulmonary heart disease, among others that are high risk and require a specialized approach.
