Guelmim-Oued Noun: A 2.27 billion dirham agreement for the upgrading of road infrastructure

This agreement, signed by the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, the Wali of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, Mohamed Najem Abhay, and the President of the Council of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, Mbarka Bouaida, is part of the implementation of the regional development program (PDR) 2023-2027.

With an investment of 2.27 billion dirhams (MMDH), this agreement aims in particular to open up and improve the economic attractiveness of the territories through the development of the road network, the strengthening of road safety conditions, as well as the improvement of road links between the provinces and cities of the region.

Mr. Baraka highlighted, on this occasion, the growth experienced by the Guelmim-Oued Noun region thanks to the new development model for the southern provinces which was launched by HM King Mohammed VI in November 2018, which made it possible to carry out structuring programs and vital equipment which contributed to developing economic indicators, providing employment opportunities and improving the living conditions of the populations.

He added that the signing of this agreement is the culmination of discussions between the partners on the region’s priorities in the road sector, with a view to meeting the economic and social needs of the population and the immediate and future demands of economic actors.

The minister recalled the projects carried out within the framework of the new development model of the southern provinces, in particular the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, whose completion rate reached 85%, specifying that his department is working to complete this project at the beginning of next year.

Regarding the Fask dam, Mr. Baraka indicated that the rate of completion of the works has reached 94%, adding that the commissioning of this dam will have a positive impact on the population of the region concerning the supply of drinking water and irrigation.

For her part, Ms. Bouaida affirmed that the signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a new generation of institutional reforms based on a participatory vision and an effective spatial approach, within the framework of advanced regionalization, adding that the efforts deployed in this regard aim to transform the challenges into opportunities for sustainable territorial development of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region by emphasizing the priority of growth for sustainable development, the renewal of natural resources, the creation of job opportunities and the valorization of Saharan areas.

She specified that the objective of this agreement is to strengthen the network of classified roads, to modernize unclassified roads and to maintain the roads, by allocating an amount of 2.27 billion dirhams, to which the region contributes 1.615 billion dirhams, stressing the importance of this contribution for the implementation of the region’s development plans through the modernization and rehabilitation of infrastructure.

On the sidelines of the signing ceremony of this agreement, which was attended in particular by the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament, Government Spokesman, Mustafa Baitas, Mr. Baraka visited the stands of the crafts and agricultural products fair as well as the heritage tent, organized as part of the 10th edition of the dromedary week festival.
