The realization of this project, on an area of 500 m2 including 237 m2 covered, with a budget of 800,000 dhs, is part of a partnership between the High Commission for Former Resistance Fighters and Former Members of the Liberation Army, the Council of the Oriental Region, the Provincial Council of Guercif and the Commune of Barkine.

This museum space contains, in particular, a gallery for the exhibition of historical documents, manuscripts, photographs and equipment such as weapons, uniforms and tools that were used during the period of the national struggle, and a library that includes publications of the High Commission and other books, in addition to reading, conference, historical research, audiovisual and training rooms.

In a speech for the occasion, Mr. El Ktiri stressed that the creation of this space stems from the pioneering position that the region occupies in the history of the national movement and resistance against foreign occupation, considering this space as a mirror that reflects the extent of the sacrifices and heroism made by the women and men of the region’s tribes against the colonial presence.

He added that this space is part of the initiatives undertaken by the High Commission with a view to preserving and promoting the national historical memory and popularizing the epics of the throne and the people for freedom, independence and the defense of territorial integrity, as well as within the framework of the royal directives calling for highlighting the cultural and civilizational heritage of the Kingdom.

He noted that the aim of these spaces is to host historical, literary and artistic museum exhibitions related to the activities of the resistance and the liberation army, which are embodied in historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, tools and ethnographic exhibitions that served the individual and collective action of the resistance.

The Barkine historical memory space is one of 104 spaces created to date by the High Commission for former resistance fighters and former members of the liberation army.
